Watershed Boulder

Andy Goldsworthy, 2015-2016 (Scotland)

Native stone

We bonded over scotch. Andy is a fellow forager like me. Once, when I was walking on the beach with Alan he asked me, ‘Can’t you ever just the walk beach and not pick things up?’
‘No,’ was my response and I gathered another shell.

Andy seems happiest when he wanders and collects things… twigs, leaves, stones. He loves the outdoors and loves manual labor. I find him to be both very serious and kind of light at the same time.

When I first saw Watershed, I knew it was more than a stone. I feel like I am in the presence of the wise one and that it says to me: I am here patiently waiting. I’m not in any rush. I’m just here—waiting patiently. I am always going to be here. ”

Andy Goldsworthy is a sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who produces site-specific sculptures and land art in natural and urban settings. The materials used in Andy Goldsworthy’s art includes mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs and water. Watershed Boulder is located in a steep, north-facing wood. During winter, the wood stays below freezing, even when the snow-covered field above thaws. Drains laid in the field collect and direct water through the wood and into the work so that it falls and freezes upon the glacial boulder at the center of the wall. As the seasons change, so does the sculpture’s interaction with the surrounding nature. In spring moss grows on the boulder. The moss dries up in the heat of summer. In winter, icicles and other ice formations appear with the snow and then thaw.
