“Alan and I first saw Dewitt’s work at the DeCordova in Lincoln, MA. We thought the trail of rusted steel bands with some smushed circles was fabulous. We looked at each other and said, ‘We need one of these!’ Dewitt is so easy and pleasant to work with. He brings his graduate students with him and teaches while he works. You can tell the students respect him and are grateful for the experience.

This piece was designed to serve as an entrance way to Winkley Brook area, which is one of the most peaceful and beautiful nooks on the property, but often overlooked by visitors. Up and Away is intended to welcome guests to take the path beyond.”

DeWitt Godfrey is an American sculptor best known for his large, playful, rubber band-like sculptural constructions of banded steel. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art history at Colgate University. This tapering form rises over 20 feet high and its double doorways lead you down a hill and into the wood. Traditionally working in a horizontal format, this is his first “vertical” piece. It encourages visitors to look up into the sky and trees.
