The Old Sage
Joseph Gray, 2021 (New Hampshire)
Verde Antique Vermont stone
“I am happy he has found water at the Winkley Brook.”
-Joseph Gray
Joseph Gray calls The Old Sage “a wise old soul who has existed now for centuries.” The piece was carved from a heavy block of Verde Antique, a serpentine-type stone from the Green Mountains of Vermont. Gray originally carved this piece for the opening exhibit of the Boston Flower Show, where the piece had water flowing over it. The rippling features on the sides of the sculpture are meant to accent the movement of that water – hence why Alan and Harriet Lewis decided to place this piece on the banks of rippling Winkley Brook at Alnoba.
