Timothy Chouinard gives new purpose to objects that have already lived long and useful lives. In Past, Present, and Future—The Wheels of Time, antique tractor wheels rise from a massive piece of reclaimed granite, bringing together two materials shaped by labor, weather and the passage of time.

Chouinard has worked with stone and granite for more than forty years. He is also a lifelong collector of industrial salvage, traveling in search of old gears, wheels, machinery and agricultural implements. Rather than erasing the signs of age from these materials, he allows their wear, texture and history to remain visible. Objects once valued for what they could do become valued for what they help us remember.

The three wheels seem to suggest an ongoing movement between past, present and future. They invoke the labor and ingenuity of those who came before us, and through this artwork, demonstrate the possibility of transformation.
