“I’ve never met Ernesto Neto, but I admired this piece when it lived at the John Hancock Building in Boston. Here was this sculpture holding up hammocks under a palm tree. The hammocks on this piece are special because three people can use them at the same time. I had this idea to bring it to Kensington and put it under a real maple.”

Ernesto Neto was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1964. His work has been the subject of major museum exhibitions throughout the world, including a retrospective in Mexico City that traveled to the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain.

Comprised of flat, biomorphic shapes, the work explores balance, tension and equilibrium, which are the central themes in Neto’s practice.

Each element of the sculpture locks into place without screws, but rather by balance and gravity. In contrast, the fabric of the ready-made hammocks drapes from the Corten steel profile and evokes a large earth-tone larva as they engulf the body like a marsupial’s pouch.
