Love Over Rules
Hank Willis Thomas, 2022 (Boston, Massachusetts)
Neon and steel
In 2022, this magnificent piece of art was constructed over a span of two days in the chilly New England weather. Standing prominently on the edge of the tree line by Alnoba’s Gathering Place, visitors are welcomed by this tall neon message peaking on the horizon as you walk up the entry trail to the overlook field.
Love Over Rules is a neon sign with six-foot-tall letters that blink a sequence of words – LOVE OVER RULES – a phrase Hank’s cousin and roommate Songha Willis spoke in a recorded message before he was fatally shot on February 2, 2000 outside of a club in Philadelphia.
