Ice Ring & Radiant Table

Michele Oka Doner, 2015 (New York)

Bronze 75 1/2 x 29 1/2 x 3 1/4 in.

“Alan and I and our daughter, Charlotte visited Michele at her studio in New York. I think Michele Oka Doner is fabulous. She has an eye and a touch, and everything about her surroundings is interesting. We were so enthralled while watching her in her studio that we missed the opening of theater show! Her work really speaks to me. There is a spirituality and a humanness to it. For me, her work says, “We are all here, and here is how we were in the beginning.” I feel it is very organic and of the earth and of the sky.”
–Harriet Lewis

Michele Oka Doner is an internationally renowned artist whose career spans over five decades. At the age of 7, Doner came upon a Venetian grotto chair in Florida. This observation taught her “that furniture doesn’t have to be mundane.” She creates furniture as works of art, which are tied closely to mythology and celestial surroundings. Ice Ring represents the ice rings found around Saturn. In the center is Radiant Disk, incised with radial marks that attract and channel light. The difference in surface treatments of the two works contrasts the coldness of Saturn’s ice rings with the bright warmth of the sun.
