Gift of Bhante Dhammagawesi (Sri Lanka)

“Sometimes it’s better to be kind than to be right. We do not need an intelligent mind that speaks but a patient heart that listens.”
-Gautama Buddha
Alnoba’s Buddha statue was a gift to the Lewis family from Bhante Dhammagawesi, a Sri Lankan monk and teacher. The Lewis family helped Bhante establish a monastery in Sri Lanka.
The triangle shape suggested by the Buddha’s head and two knees in this posture creates a serene and solid foundation. The hand gesture he makes is a mudra, specifically the Dharmachakra Mudra where the fingers make two contiguous circles at heart level. This mudra links Dharma – the nature of universal truth – with spiritual community. The artist of the piece is unknown.
