Indeterminate Line
Bernar Venet, 2010 (France)
Rolled steel, 93 3/8 x 102 3/8 x 78 3/4 in.
“I had been looking at Venet’s work for a while when I saw this piece in an art gallery. I love spirals. I think they are very contemporary. I have a spiral ring that Charlotte made for me in summer camp. I wear it on my pinky. The one time I took it off I broke my ankle. This piece reminds me of my ring and my daughter.”

Bernar Venet is a French artist who was inspired by the works of Minimalist sculptors like Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Carl Andre. He then began producing torch-cut or rolled steel beam sculptures that resemble scribbles, lines and arcs. Venet says that his sculpture is about “how metal resists.” They are a test of strength—a battle between myself and a piece of metal.”
