Shellfish Superheroes featuring Island Creek Oyster and Nature Conservancy.

OYSTER RESTORATION BY DESIGN IN GREAT BAY ESTUARY AND HOW AQUACULTURE PROVIDES FOOD AND JOBS AROUND THE WORLD

Welcome to Alnoba’s ChangeMaker Supper Club series. This month we will dive into the topic of oyster restoration by desing in Great Bay Estuary and how aquaculture provides food and jobs around the world.. and what better way to learn about oysters, than to enjoy them!

Historically, the Great Bay Estuary was covered in oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs.  Due to overharvest and environmental stressors, the reefs have largely been lost and with that the loss of the ecosystem services provided by the reefs.  Dr. Alix Laferriere of The Nature Conservancy shares the story of their partnership with the University of New Hampshire to restore a 28-acre footprint of these reefs.   She will also discuss their strategy to define where and how we conduct restoration in the future in order integrate it with additional interests such as recreational harvest areas, oyster aquaculture opportunities and eelgrass regeneration areas.

She is joined by Chris Sherman, President of Island Creek Oysters and Chair of the company’s non-profit arm, Island Creek Oysters Foundation, Island Creek believes in aquaculture is a sustainable source of protein for the whole world and funds projects that promote aquaculture as a responsible means of solving the issue of global food production.  Chris will share stories from his recent trip abroad as an Eisenhower Fellow and the Foundation’s work in East Africa, Haiti and the US.

We hope you will join us for this month’s ChangeMaker Supper Club!
