Philip Conkling founded the Island Institute in 1983 and served as its leader for 30 years. He continues his work as an environmental consultant and is the author of many books on local and global environmental topics, including Islands in Time – A Natural and Cultural History of the Islands of Maine and The Fate of GreenlandLessons from Abrupt Climate Change. His current consulting work includes renewable energy development projects and non-profit development strategies. What he learned from Maine’s islands and islanders resulted in invitations to travel to other archipelagos, including Greenland, the Aleutians, and the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan.
